THOMSONFLY CUTS COVENTRY SERVICES

Coventry Airport will not have a passenger airline service in the near future.

ThomsonFly, a low cost airline, said it is suspending its operations from Coventry Airport from November 2008. The increased focus on charter flights rather than scheduled flights operating from Coventry airport is the main reason ThomsonFly took this decision.

Since ThomsonFly started operations in March 2004, it has run only passenger service at Coventry airport. The airport lost a High Court appeal to build a passenger terminal capable of handling two million passengers a year, now the airport will be left without a passenger airline service. However, the business aviation and cargo operations will continue.

ThomsonFly said that all passengers who booked to fly with ThomsonFly from Coventry after 2 November2008 would be eligible for a refund or alternative flight. Anyone affected by this should get in contact with the airline's customer service department as soon as possible.

ThomsonFly said they would try to find their staff at the airport other jobs in the company. Chris Browne, Managing director, said: "With an increased focus on charter holiday flights, there is now a growing need for our aircraft on these routes and consequently our scheduled operations at Coventry Airport will regrettably terminate."

The airport has said it regrets, but understands, the decision. Brian Cox, Executive chairman, said: "The length of time and inordinate cost involved in seeking improved terminal facilities has not helped and obviously we are disappointed by the outcome of the appeal to the High Court, as I am sure our passengers, the local business community and those directly or indirectly involved with the airport are too." He emphasised that the airport still had a bright future.
